The Decline of Educational Priorities: A Teacher’s Perspective
By Raza Ul Haq
Education is the foundation upon which the progress of a nation depends. As a teacher, I have witnessed how students’ priorities have shifted over the years. Today, a growing number of students are engaging in activities that are not only distracting but also contradict the moral and ethical values of our society. In the name of "culture," dance and other activities that promote vulgarity are being embraced, often at the cost of academic excellence and character development.
The Shift in Focus
It is concerning to see students, who should be focused on gaining knowledge and building their future, investing their time in dance competitions, musical performances, and other entertainment-driven activities. There is a common saying in today’s society: “Every failure is a good dancer.” This reflects a harsh reality—many students who struggle academically are turning toward these activities as a way to escape their educational shortcomings. Instead of working harder in their studies, they choose to shine in entertainment, seeking temporary fame rather than long-term success.
While extracurricular activities are important for personal development, they should not come at the expense of academic performance. The primary duty of a student is to learn, explore knowledge, and contribute positively to society. However, in recent times, the balance between education and entertainment has been lost.
The Role of Parents and Institutions;
Parents and educational institutions play a crucial role in shaping students' priorities. Unfortunately, in many cases, parents encourage their children to participate in dance and music programs without considering the impact on their moral and academic growth. Schools and colleges, too, are organizing such events under the pretext of cultural appreciation, further reinforcing the belief that entertainment is more important than education.
Islam teaches us discipline, hard work, and the pursuit of knowledge. Any activity that distracts from these fundamental principles should be reconsidered. Instead of promoting dance and music, institutions should encourage students to engage in productive extracurricular activities such as debates, science exhibitions, and sports that enhance both mental and physical abilities.
The Link Between Extracurricular Activities and Academic Failure;
It is undeniable that many students who engage excessively in such activities tend to neglect their studies. The amount of time spent practicing for dance performances or attending late-night events affects their concentration in class. Sleep deprivation, lack of focus, and an overall decline in academic motivation are common consequences. As a result, their grades drop, and their future opportunities become limited.
This is not to say that all extracurricular activities are harmful. Sports, arts, and intellectual pursuits help in character building and teamwork. However, when entertainment-based activities take precedence over learning, they become a distraction rather than a benefit.
A Call for Change;
It is time to rethink our approach toward student development. The responsibility lies with parents, teachers, and society as a whole to ensure that our students are on the right path. Educational institutions should prioritize moral and intellectual growth, emphasizing Islamic values and the importance of hard work. Instead of promoting dance and entertainment, students should be encouraged to engage in activities that contribute to their knowledge, discipline, and personal growth.
Success in life is not determined by how well one dances or entertains an audience—it is determined by how well one learns, applies knowledge, and contributes positively to society. If we do not correct the course now, we risk raising a generation that values temporary pleasure over lasting achievement.
